U Mumba Future Stars is a parallel incubation programme launched in 2014, which offers Kabaddi players a platform to demonstrate their talent and be an integral part of U Mumba, the pro-team which represents Mumbai in Pro Kabaddi League.
Conceptualised by U Sports, U Mumba Future Stars aims to train and incubate young athletes in the age group of 18-22 years and help them grow into professional players. With nearly 500 Kabaddi clubs in western region alone, the city boasts of a rich legacy and has numerous schools playing the sport.
Through this programme, U Sports aims to create a funnel which will serve as a mechanism for introduction, development and eventual selection of local talent into the main Pro League Team. The selection tournaments serve as a platform for Mumbai’s youth to exhibit their talent in Kabaddi.
The first edition of U Mumba Future Stars saw two youngsters being drafted into U Mumba’s pro-squad in Season 2, selected amongst a group of talented players.
The second edition of U Mumba Future Stars took place in March 2017, 32 teams fought it out in the group stages with the top team in each group qualifying for the Knock-Out stage. Taking place over a period of 4 weekends in March, under the watchful eye of Coach Bhaskaran and Captain Anup Kumar, Maharshi Dayanand College won the tournament.
